About the Board of Trustees
The governing authority of Marist Brothers International School is vested in two interlinked bodies, the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees. These bodies are filled by volunteers from the greater Marist community together with persons of learning and experience from all walks of life. Supervision of the school’s administration is the responsibility of the Board of Directors, consisting of six persons presided over by a Chairperson and including the Head of School. The Directors, together with seven additional Trustees comprise a larger body, the Board of Trustees, which serves a wider advisory and policy formulating role.
Since 2004 MBIS has functioned as an Educational Corporation registered by the government of Hyogo Prefecture. Prior to that time it was a Religious Corporation managed by the local chapter of the Marist Brothers, an order of Catholic educators. The past few years have seen the rise of a movement to get more participation by members of Marist stakeholder groups (parents, teachers, alumni) in school governance.
Each year the Directors and Trustees set goals to fulfill the responsibilities of the Board and establish standing committees to manage its work. The number and responsibilities of the committees change from time to time, but they are open to the participation of all Marist community members, regardless of whether they are Trustees or not. Recently an Annual General Meeting has been instituted where all stakeholders are free to review the policies and actions of the Board. Although the day to day operation of the school is managed by the administration and carried out by faculty and staff, members of other stakeholder groups are strongly encouraged to involve themselves in school governance, and indeed to put their names forward as nominees for service as Trustees at the Annual General Meeting.
